Wacky: Why I Love Security Cameras

I had to play this one about five times before I could stop laughing. This is the type of thing that people who didn’t actually see the event go down say doesn’t happen. Sort of like the classic port-a-potty overturn or a car blowing a rod straight through an engine. But it does happen, and in this case we’ve got proof.

I could make a pot hole/city road crew joke, or perhaps a Georgia joke here, but I don’t feel I really need to. It’s just a bit of video that urges everyone else to make sure you know what you’re driving on or well — you know. The funniest bit is at the very end and the way the plow settles.

Quickly Locate Holes For European-Style Hinges

Finding the holes for European-style hinges isn’t particularly troublesome, especially if you take the time to make a simple jig, but the makers of the Hingemark think you can do it more quickly and accurately with their jig.

The jig has two stops that you fold down to catch the edge of the door when marking the holes for the hinges. When the jig is in position you just tap the spring-loaded punch labeled door. To mark the mating holes in the carcass you just fold the stops up, slide the jig into place, and tap the two punches labeled “cabinet.”

Hingemaker provides a video on their site, but it requires Windows Media Player (or a suitable plugin) to watch. Let me just begin loading Netscape Navigator… They need to get with the program and post a video everybody can easily watch, like this YouTube video I’m linking to from CabinetmakerFDM.

It’s Just Cool: A Lumber Score

For the last few years, a giant pile of wood has languished behind my dad’s place. It actually came from Chuck’s dad’s stockpile. It’s funny how the stuff moves around and you just expect that it’s there and move on. Last week I got curious, so I took a small sampling and hauled it home to find out what it was and if it was any good anymore.

It’s been sitting outside basically uncovered and out in the elements for at least two years. I cut into one piece and ran it across a sander and joiner just to take a look. After a little oil to freshen it up it and make sure I was indeed seeing what I thought I was seeing, it turns out that at least some of the pile is quarter-sawn oak.

For an amateur furniture builder like me, I might as well have found an old muscle car in the garage that for its entire life was only driven to church and back. This kind of thing just doesn’t happen — to us, anyway. Sure, it’s not maple or mahogany, but were that the case it probably would have just split and have been ruined anyway.

Now all I’ve got to do it resaw, cut, plane and sand the stuff back into usable stock. Even if we lose half of it in the preparation, it’s still cheaper than buying it.
