  Dealmonger: DeWalt XRP 18V 4-Piece Kit for $389

  Looking for a killer “big present” for your favorite DIYer? Sure, lithium ion is the hot ticket, but step back to Ni-Cd and you find deals like this: a four-piece DeWalt cordless kit — hammer-drill, impact driver, recip saw, and flashlight — for under $400, complete with a battery and charger.

  The kit includes the the DCD951 hammer-drill, delivering 420 unit-watts of power, and featuring a 3-speed all-metal transmission and 1/2″ ratcheting keyless chuck, the DC825 impact driver, outputting 1,335 in-lbs of torque via 0-2,400 RPM variable speed, and the DC385 recip saw. You also get the DW908 pivoting-head flashlight.

  Again, there are a lot newer DeWalt options available, but we still think finding this under the tree would make a lot of people happy. And if they really want to upgrade to li-ion down the road, the DC9180C kit ($150) provides a li-ion battery and charger that works fine with this kit. So it’s an option.

  Renew Your Drum Sander

  You may have used an abrasive cleaning stick to clean the gunk out of the abrasive belt on your belt sander, but what do you use to clean the abrasive drum on your drum sander? A giant sheet of abrasive cleaner, of course.

  As far I as I can find, there are two options: a 15″ x 20″ sheet of 3/4″ crepe rubber backed with piece of 1/4″ plywood from Highland Woodworking, or a 13″ x 20″ x 1-1/8″ thick cleaning pad from Busy Bee Tools. Run either pad through your drum sander just like you’re sanding a piece of wood. The pad will unclog the abrasive, making it cut better, and prolong its life.

  Highland Tool’s abrasive cleaning pad will run you $99 while Busy Bee Tool’s pad will only set you back $38. I’m not sure why one is more than twice as expensive as the other.

  Toolmonger’s Favorite Tools of 2010

  Rather than just rounding up the the new tools this year and picking our favorites, we’ve taken a very Toolmonger approach. These are the tools we used the most in our shop during 2010 — the ones we just couldn’t or didn’t want to put away no matter how hard we tried. Yes, it’s time again for the Toolmonger Favorite Tools list, 2010 edition.

  Some are new, some are older. Some are tools we’ve reviewed in the past, and some are just tools that we dropped our hard-earned cash for because we needed (or wanted) ‘em. But they all share one common thread: we used the ever-lovin’ crap out of them, and we can recommend them wholeheartedly.

  You’ll also notice that the pictures we’ll post aren’t studio shots. They’re photos of the actual tools we used and beat to hell — dirt, scratches, and all, because we like it that way.

  We’ll post the list one tool at a time and follow with a roundup once we’ve revealed all our selections. We look forward to hearing your opinions in comments.
