Leatherman Knifeless Fuse

The Leatherman Knifeless Fuse is a combination tool that comes without a knife. Marketed for “knife-prohibitive situations,” the tool contains 13 standard tools (needlenose/regular pliers, two wire cutters, wire stripper, small/large/Phillips screwdrivers, scissors, file, can/bottle opener, 8″ ruler) that one would expect in a multi-tool.

If you work at a school or an airport, this combination tool is marketed for you. While TSA will probably make the rest of us check this, there are certainly occupations where having a knife is a liability rather than an asset. The remaining tools, as expected, are consistent with Leatherman’s reputation for quality.

The Knifeless Fuse benefits from Leatherman’s new design — the jaw and wire cutter/stripper are longer than before, and the grips are now Zytel (nylon). Additionally, Leatherman claims the tool locking system is “50% stronger” than previous versions.

All said, it’s a tool for a very specialized group of folks, but if you’re one of them, this’ll do the trick.

Piggyback Anchor Straps

Although they’re intended for motorcycle and ATV users, I think Piggyback Anchor Straps® would also work well in other applications such as securing things in the back of your pickup. They appear to be easy to use, and are certainly not likely to provide that “smacked in the face by an overstretched bungee cord” effect — which hurts, a lot. Just trust me on that.

This $28 kit comprises two short Piggyback straps, each having two D rings (seen above), two 60″ long straps, and two 72″ long straps. All of the straps are 1″ wide nylon webbing with a loop at one end. Once you’ve tied down an object using the D-ring and 60″ straps, you can “piggyback” another load using the 72″ straps and the second D ring.

Hey, it’s tons better than leaving your gear strung out all over the road.

Preview: Woodpeckers Giant Square

A framing square just isn’t designed to work with sheets of plywood. Especially when making cabinets, most pieces you need to lay out exceed the length of a standard sized framing square. That’s why Woodpeckers designed their 36″x24″ giant square.

Woodpeckers’ CNC machines the square in the USA from 1/4″ phenolic and guarantees the giant square won’t deviate more that ±.005″ from 90° across its entire length. They make the 36″ long leg 3″ wide and the 24″ leg 4″ wide, and machine three handle slots into the square to make it easy to hold and store. Finally, they laser engrave markings in 1/8″ increments along both sides of the square.

Woodpeckers will begin shipping their giant square the 27th of July (2009) and it will cost about $80 shipped.

I call this one “Too Sexy For My Bridge.” The princely stance and smirk on reader Jeffrey.Immer’s mug are just about perfect for a day’s work well done. I’m always amazed at how these guys bust ass. It is their job, that’s true, but they get it done in places other guys might wither and wimp out.

My elevated walkway from the battalion building to the company buildings, it was unbelievable hot out that day, like 115 or something ungodly like that. We built the 45′ long walk in one day and incorporated solar lights into the handrail - that was bardsley’s idea. Me and him are like Adler and Sullivan (me being Adler.)

For those of you not as up on your 19th-century architects as the good Mr. Immer here: Adler and Sullivan were rather famous Chicago building designers in the late 1800’s and designed some of the most historic buildings in town. Places like Garrick Theater (which was sadly destroyed in 1961) and the Chicago Stock Exchange building on North LaSalle Street which still stands today are just a few examples of their fine work.

Come to think of it, Immer and Bardsley does sound like one of those big to-do firms that charge an arm and a leg to design a modern work of art. Of course, after the war, who’s to say it won’t be?

Paslode Cordless Tools Winner

We drew the lucky winner of the Paslode Cordless Tools and found that reader Kyle I will be the lucky recipient of the tools. After we contacted him, he opted for the angled nailer and was very excited to get started on the jobs around his place that have been piling up.

Doh! When it Rains Dirt

YouTube user MasterGrayFox02 good-naturedly posted this video of himself trying to figure out how to use a small excavator to load dirt into a truck. No injuries here, just a mistake that’ll require a little cleanup. As MasterGrayFox02 put it, it’s “how to tell there is a new guy working on the machines.”

Ron’s Home and Hardware has the Shur-Line 9″ Pad Painter for only $3.85. This is good stuff, ya’ll. If you’re moving out of an apartment it will fix paint problems correctly — after you plug the holes with toothpaste.

It’s the quick and easy way to paint a large flat surface and a great alternative to rollers or brushes. If you happened to miss some spots on the way out of the apartment, not to worry, because the pad painter is also the first choice of slumlords everywhere. Did we mention it’s cheap?
