What you see pictured above are Ringers Gloves’ model R-21 “heavy-duty Kevlocs,” and they look like some of the most badass gloves for heavy automotive work I’ve seen. Seriously, with crazy-tough puncture resistance, high-tech padding in all the right places, and specially-designed grip surfaces, these put the scores of low-buck work gloves I keep around the shop to shame. Then again, they MSRP for $45 freakin’ dollars.
What do you get for $35 more than your average pair of work gloves? To start with, you get a specially-sewn palm that meets the European “CE 4342 EN388 Level 2 standard for cut and puncture resistance.” WTF-BBQ? Yeah, I had no idea what that was, either, so I did a little digging, and here’s how it works:
To get gloves certified to the “cut” portion of this standard, companies send them off to a test lab, which mounts them on a machine that “uses a counter-rotating circular blade that is constantly moved back and forth across a sample by the test machine.” [Here's my source.] Then they look up the results on a table to determine the performance level. (Samples received the highest fully-achieved level.) So a “level 2″ glove survived at least 2.5 cycles, but less than five.
The puncture section of the test pushes a sharp object reportedly similar in nature to a roofing nail into the sample at ever increasing force, measuring the force at which puncture occurs. Again, a level 2 rating indicates a force of more than 60 newtons, but less than 100. That’s about 13.5 pounds to 22.5 pounds of force, for those of us who’re metrically challenged.
To put all this in perspective, “level 5″ gloves — the top-rating category, and the one required for really, truly scary crap like dealing with infected hypodermic needles and picking up broken glass all day in factories — would withstand at or over 20 cut cycles and more than 150 newtons (33 pounds) of force.
Next you get a whole bunch of special padding materials, like “impact gel” padding in the palm and “shock-absorbing” knuckle pads, plus some cool tacky material on the fingertips to help you hang on to little screws and so on. The specs also list a “non-binding Supercuff” which makes me think of Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop, but probably mans that it’s short enough that it doesn’t cut into your hand when you’re bending your wrist a severe angles.
So yeah. In short, you get a reasonably-tough glove — about as tough as you can realistically expect without it becoming so thick that it’s completely unusable — with some damn cool protective features that looks like the sort of thing the Master Chief would wear to change the oil on his Warthog between firefights, assuming he’d selected bright safety yellow armor. You know, for camouflage.
Do I need these? Not really. But I want ‘em. And if reading any of the above makes you wonder what gloves that meet different versions of those standard look like, check out the rest of Ringers’ offerings. They make gloves for everyone from mechanics to cops and oil and gas workers. Interesting stuff.
Slightly good news: the MSRP is inflated. I found ‘em online for $38. Still, $38 will buy a lot of electricity. Or the speedo cable and crank sensor seal my Mazda needs.

The larger li-ion battery packs tool companies are putting out today are getting closer to giving us the kind of power and duration they’ve been promising since the eighties. Just slide a pack in and do whatever you need to do — like mow the lawn. Sure, Ryobi isn’t the first electric mower or even the first to use a battery. What it really does is prove engineers are still working on solving all household issues with reusable battery packs; hell, Craftsman’s even got a 48v mower.
The specs for the Ryobi show a 50-lb. mower sporting a 16″ cutting deck that takes about an hour and a half to charge the battery, so multiple batteries for a larger yard wold be advisable. This rig isn’t a giant sod-trimming monster and doesn’t look like it would handle stubborn grass that’s been left uncut for a few weeks. That’s strictly opinion, but seeing how a gas-powered lawn tractor had trouble on my Texas weeds, I’m guessing this little mower would as well.
We’d love to see how much it would actually take to stall one of these green machines vs. how long it would run (we’re guessing 20-30 minutes for most folks). It does look good, and the Aussies say it runs very well — as far as we can tell the Ryobi 36v isn’t available here in the states yet.

Pretty much everyone is producing one of these now, and here’s Skil’s version: the 2 amp model 1400. Not surprisingly, they chose to go corded, keeping the price down and the functionality high. (I love the fact that Skil, by the way, still offers corded drills, and that most of the big box stores choose Skil as the token corded drill they carry in-store. If you don’t own a corded drill, get one today. You know, like I suggested you do back in 2009.)
Specs are similar to others you’ll see: 12,000-22,000 OPM (oscillations per minute) with a nice variable speed controller. It’s pretty heavy at 2.75 lbs, but do you really care for a corded tool?
I’m not enough of a remodeling guy to know exactly how everyone uses these, but I’ve read literally thousands of product spec sheets. This one screams to me “targeted at the one-or-two project guy who wants the right and functional tool but isn’t going to spend hundreds of dollars on it.” And by “one-or-two project guy” I don’t mean a guy who wants the tool to only last through one or two projects, but rather the guy who’s not remodeling every day — the guy who has a project in mind when he heads to the store. That’s very much Skil’s market, of course, and in my experience they serve it pretty well. Sean, for example, still has his cheap-ass $25 Skil sidewinder circ saw — the same one you’ve seen featured here in TM as well as in the pages of Popular Science. (No, really. A picture of *me* hasn’t appeared in PopSci. But Sean’s Skilsaw’s mug has.) We used Skil jigsaws to build the plywood dino a few years back, and volunteers helped us beat the crap out of them. The jigsaws still work, and I still have one kicking around.
Street pricing for this thing runs around $90, with deals as low as $75 if you shop hard. That may seem high, considering that you can find the Bosch PS50 — the upscale, li-ion version of this — for around $75, too. But remember that that’s the PS50 in tool only configuration. You’ll need batteries and a charger. The full PS50 kit’ll set you back about $160. Plus, you have to keep it charged — or if you have a long job, you’ll need enough batteries for continuous use.

We love writing about flashlights here at Toolmonger, mostly because flashlights are incredibly useful but somehow almost always seem to end up as the least-thought-out “extra” in a combo count. We think (and suspect you do, too) that flashlights are good for more than just increasing tool count. So I couldn’t help but give a mention to Makita’s new offering, the excitingly-named (kidding) LXLM01. The name might be forgettable, but I thought one thing when I saw this sucker: it looks exactly like those awkward lights everyone carried around on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
No, really. Consider:
Every time I saw someone on Trek carrying one of those things, I thought, “Why don’t they carry it like a normal flashlight?” Makita seems to get this. Yes, the Makita is a very similar shape. But they seem to have incorporated some improvements that clearly escaped Trek’s imagination.
Mentally remove the grip strap, and the Makita’s form factor looks pretty similar to the DeWalt light we thought so highly of. Of course, Makita opted for a six-LED fixed array instead of the DeWalt’s single bright LED in a swivel mount. The downside of this is that you lose the DeWalt’s awesome ability to sit upright on its stand and swivel to provide light in almost any direction. I like the grip strap, though, as at least 50% of the time I find myself carrying the DeWalt light around like a normal flashlight, gripping it around the edges. That strap would make it a lot more stable.
Another consideration is power. The Makita is a lot bigger than it looks. That’s a whopping 18V battery attached to it, instead of the small, compact 12V you see on the DeWalt. That easily accounts for its 50-hour runtime; any battery that’ll drive a recip saw will easily drive six LEDs for long enough for you to forget the last time you charged it.
Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see one of these in person, both to get an idea of whether the strap is really a good thing or not and to find out whether or not this shape of light really works in such a scaled-up size. The light streets for around $20, tool only, and you’ll (surprise) find it included in lots of various combo kits.

We wrote about Craftsman’s Hammerhead “Auto-Hammer” way back in 2008. Our initial take: It was an interesting solution to a pretty rare problem. When came in possession of one a good bit later, we were surprised to discover that it worked as advertised. (For those of you not familiar, a small anvil inside the hole you see on the head drives a nail with hundreds of short but powerful blows. It feels a little like a pneumatic palm nailer, but it’s battery powered and — as we mentioned back in ’08 — features a much different shape.) But we just couldn’t see it as a serious solution for driving thousands of nails. Rather, we suspected it would find a home more as a specialty tool for tasks like, say, driving a nail in between studs or in other tight spaces.
Enter now the updated version, the Hammerhead G2, pictured above. What, you ask, might they add? Try a light. And a rotating head.
Which actually makes a lot of sense, right? The whole point of this thing, at least as we see it, is for driving nails in hard-to-reach places. So anything they can do to make it more space-flexible seems like a good idea to us. If anything, the rotating head would seem to indicate that Craftsman has finally dropped their vision of a guy in a flannel shirt building a deck with the damn thing and instead accepted the tool’s clear role as problem-solver. Check out the pic they include on the Craftsman site (link below), which shows a guy reaching above his head to drive a nail in what looks like a basement ceiling.
So the bad news: It’s still waaaaay too expensive. $90 seems like too big an ask for a specialty tool that’ll only exit the toolbox on rare occasions. Of course, it’s those specialty tools that (as we’ve pointed out many times) save your ass. Or arm.

When a node is first created it is mutable (edges can be created or changed), but it does not own refs on nodes it points to, so the client of my library is responsible for keeping nodes alive through this first stage. When they client is ready they can “finalize” a set of nodes which does the SCC search and guarantees, from then on, that all reachable nodes are always kept alive.
If each node is immutable once initialized, how do you build a cycle to begin with? Do you build nodes in batches?
